Comparison
The short answer
Evernote and OneNote are the two long-standing general-purpose note apps, and they feel very different. Evernote is a filing cabinet: linear notes in notebooks, an excellent web clipper, and search that reaches inside documents. OneNote is a paper notebook: a freeform canvas where you click anywhere to type, draw, or paste, organized into sections and pages.
For many people the decision is cost. OneNote is free with a Microsoft account, while Evernote's free plan is capped so low that regular use means a subscription. If you want freeform pages, handwriting, or you already live in Microsoft 365, OneNote is the obvious choice. If you want fast capture and to find anything later by searching, and you are willing to pay, Evernote remains the more focused tool.
Side by side
| Aspect | Evernote | OneNote |
|---|---|---|
| Page model | Linear notes, like documents | Freeform canvas: click anywhere to type, draw, or paste |
| Organization | Notebooks, stacks, and tags | Notebooks, sections, and pages |
| Search | Strong, including inside PDFs and images depending on plan | Searches typed text, plus text in images and handwriting |
| Capture | One of the best web clippers, plus scanning and email-in | Web clipper, strong pen and stylus support, Office integration |
| Cost model | Free plan capped at 50 notes; subscription beyond that | Free with a Microsoft account; storage counts against OneDrive |
| Platforms | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web |
| Export | ENEX or HTML | PDF or OneNote's own formats; clean text is awkward to get out |
| Best at | Finding one thing in a large archive | Lecture notes, sketches, and freeform pages |
Beyond the table
Evernote keeps notes in a list and expects you to find them by searching. OneNote lays them out like a ring binder and expects you to find them by flipping to the right section. Searchers tend to prefer Evernote; browsers tend to prefer OneNote. It is a difference in temperament more than in features.
OneNote is free with a Microsoft account and limited mainly by OneDrive storage. Evernote's free plan stops at 50 notes and one notebook. If you do not have a strong reason to prefer Evernote's clipper and search, it is hard to justify the subscription against a free tool this capable.
Evernote exports ENEX, an XML format ordinary apps cannot open. OneNote exports PDFs or its own formats, and getting clean, editable text out of freeform pages takes effort. If you are choosing between them now, it is worth knowing that either archive will be work to move later. For Evernote, Mindly offers a free browser-based ENEX to Markdown converter.

A third option
Evernote and OneNote both come from an era when the job of a note app was storage. They hold a great deal and leave the organizing to notebooks, sections, and your own memory of where things went.
Fifteen years of notes later, the usual complaint about both is the same: it is all in there, and I cannot find it.
Mindly is a second brain app for Mac built on that idea. One shortcut captures notes, links, files, PDFs, and voice. AI tags, summarizes, and connects each item as it arrives, and the library is stored on your Mac. It runs on macOS only and it is not a team workspace, so if Evernote or OneNote matches how you work, use it.
Coming from the original web clipper. What carries over, what finally gets to retire, and what the modern version of that workflow looks like.
Microsoft's notebook against a Mac-native second brain. The ecosystem question, answered without the corporate hedging.
Common questions
It is better value, since it is free, and better for handwriting and freeform pages. Evernote is better for web clipping, scanning, and search across a large archive. If cost matters most, OneNote wins.
Yes. OneNote is free with a Microsoft account on all major platforms. Notebooks are stored in OneDrive, so the practical limit is your OneDrive storage.
OneNote. Its freeform canvas and pen support are well suited to handwritten notes and sketches, particularly on tablets, and it can search handwriting.
Only if you rely on what Evernote does best: its web clipper, document scanning, and search inside PDFs and images. For general note-taking, most people are well served by OneNote at no cost.
